What Is Advocacy?

Do you feel strongly about an issue in your life or community and want to do something about it? Do you have a passion for change and want to help others? You can be an advocate! But, what is advocacy?

According to the Alliance for Justice, advocacy is simply any action that “speaks in favor of, recommends, argues for a cause, supports or defends, or pleads on behalf of others.” This means that anyone can be an advocate! Whether you are advocating for yourself, your family or members of your community, you have the ability to create change.

In order to be an effective advocate, you should:

  • Educate yourself on the issue you wish to advocate for.
  • Engage with your community about this issue.
  • Advocate with policymakers to affect change.
