Steps to Become a Kinship Caregiver

  1. Allegheny County Office of Children, Youth and Families makes a referral to A Second Chance, Inc.
  2. ASCI caseworker makes contact with the kinship caregiver.
  3. ASCI caseworker makes a home visit within 24 hours—safety assessment completed; initial home inspection conducted; policies reviewed; Act 160, FBI, child abuse and criminal investigation clearances completed.
  4. Caregiver attends Kinship Family Enrichment Workshop (training includes Prudent Parenting).
  5. Caregiver completes CPSL online training (Child Protective Services Law).
  6. Caregiver completes FBI fingerprinting.
  7. Caregiver receives medical examination and tuberculosis test, with doctor’s signature.
  8. Caregiver obtains certification approval as kinship parent if requirements are met.
