Steps to Become a Kinship Caregiver

  1. Philadelphia Department of Human Services or CUA makes a referral to A Second Chance, Inc.
  2. ASCI Children and Family Services supervisor makes contact with the kinship caregiver.
  3. ASCI caseworker makes a home visit within 24 hours—safety assessment completed; initial home inspection conducted; policies reviewed; Act 160, FBI, child abuse and criminal investigation clearances completed.
  4. Caregiver attends Kinship Family Enrichment Workshop (training includes foster parent orientation).
  5. Caregiver completes CPSL online training (Child Protective Services Law).Caregiver completes FBI fingerprinting.
  6. Documentation of medical examination and tuberculosis test of the kinship caregiver provided to ASCI caseworker.
  7. Kinship caregiver obtains certification approval as foster parent if requirements are met.
