Staff Celebrates Black History Month with Spirit Week

In honor of National Have Fun at Work Day (Friday, January 31, 2019) and to kick off Black History Month, ASCI hosted a Black History Month Spirit Week the first week in February!

Staff who participated received two wellness points (for a maximum of 10 points for the week). Additionally, one winner was chosen each day and received a gift card.

All Black Everything Winner:

Vania McClendon

Staff were encouraged to wear all black. Vania McClendon, Communications Generalist, wore a black sweater with matching pants and shoes. McClendon liked All Black Everything Day because, “black is slimming and black is beautiful,” she said.

Twin Day Winners:

Davida Allen and Moriah Love

Staff either wore matching outfits or dressed in a theme. Senior director Davida Allen and HR supervisor Moriah Love are pictured wearing their winning look: denim shirts, black jeans and black heels.

Inspiration Day Winner:

Dawn Heiser

Staff respectfully dressed up as figures from various periods of history who inspire them, in order to pay homage to people of color. Family Service Transportation worker Dawn Heiser chose to wear a James Conner jersey because of his inspirational life journey. Heiser said she loves his determination to continue through life no matter what is against him.

Decade Day Winner:

Dr. Raymond Thomas

Staff wore costumes inspired by their favorite decades. Pictured is Vania McClendon as a member of the Black Panther party and senior director Dr. Raymond Thomas dressed as a B-Boy from the 1980s. Thomas explained that the 1980s were pivotal in African-American culture and helped shape him into the man he is today!

Black History Month T-Shirt Day Winner:

Stacy Wright (far right)

Staff rocked T-shirts and sweatshirts that promote positive messages and pay homage to black history. Stacy’s shirt is labeled “Melanin” to pay homage to the different shades of African-American skin.

All staff, no matter their cultural backgrounds, were encouraged to participate in ASCI’s Spirit Week, as Black History Month should be celebrated and embraced by all races. We champion and respect the cultures of our staff, as well as the families and communities we serve.
