Grandfamilies: Make Your Voices Heard!

Make your voice heard in Washington, D.C.! Input needed: Supporting Grandparents Raising Grandchildren

If you are (or once were) a grandparent or an older relative raising children, or if your organization provides support for those who are, the Supporting Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Council needs your help to identify:

  • Best practices, resources and other useful information for grandparents and other older relatives raising children;
  • Gaps in available resources;
  • Unique needs of children affected by opioid misuse;
  • And unique needs of members of Native American tribes.

This information will be used to plan the Council’s future activities and ultimately will be included in a report to Congress, which also will be shared publicly.

  • $249 per mth for an 8 yr old…..how is this in the best interest of the child? School, after school funtions, school pics, book fair sports. All that costs way more.

  • Something needs to be done when grandparents are raising grands . Yet state wont give custody even after kids are abandoned. Because they dropped them somewhere theyre cared for.

  • Hello. Unfortunately, I only came across this article this evening. My husband and I have been raising four children since they were 5, 3, 2 and 1 years old. We have had custody going on seven years. There are no resources for us. Yes, the kids have Medicaid and free lunch at school but that is where the assistance stops. We struggled so much when we first received custody–we basically had to mourn our lives as we knew it; those days were gone. There was no money to go out to eat as a family, (we still had three of our own children that we were raising), there were no vacations. Please help people who step up and keep children out of foster care. Our lives matter too.

  • I only came across this now. Needed: support groups. I’m a widowed grandma and have been taking care of my 3 1/2 year old grandson since birth. Except for Medicaid health ins for him I get absolutely ZERO financial assistance from anyone. Instead of retiring I’ve still had to work. Day care alone is $195 per week. I’m close to financially drowning; diapers, formula, clothes, doctor bills etc, And I’m scared. Not only about the financial future but I havnt had a small child for 40 years. And what happens if my health goes bad? Or if I get Covid? I’m doing the best I can figure out to do but really wish I had someone to talk to about my fears and concerns

    • Hi Sally, please reach out to our Family and Community Engagement department for information about our support groups and assistance we may be able to give you! You are a blessing to your grandson, but you’re not in this alone. Contact Dr. David Brock at Davidb2@asecondchance-kinship.com.
