Adventures of Sable Brown Author Teaches Kids About COVID-19

Shalise Gardner, author of children’s book Adventures of Sable Brown, has now created informative flyers that give youth safety tips to follow during COVID-19.

With guidelines changing from day to day, Gardner wanted to create an easier way for children to understand the possible symptoms and how to stay safe. “If you’re feeling this way, tell your parents,” she encourages youth. “Get tested. Wash your hands. Be safe around your friends and family.”

Kids will find the characters in the posters familiar: Sable and Sammie, a pair of siblings portrayed in Gardner’s Adventures of Sable Brown. This time, COVID-19 is the new challenge they have taken on with their wise friend, Dr. Smooh.

By illustrating large and colorful pictures like in the book, Gardner hopes children will be encouraged to follow the safety tips provided. “With the bright and pretty colors, they can see [how to be safe]. They can see cartoon characters wearing their masks,” she says.

Gardner will be distributing the posters to local daycares, schools and various community stores in the Pittsburgh area. To request copies, email sygardner41@yahoo.com.

The Adventures of Sable Brown series will continue as Gardner hopes to release the next addition, Adventures of Sable Brown: Under the Sea, at the end of this year!
