Learn the Signs of ALS

May is ALS Awareness Month—a time to raise awareness about amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and the importance of early detection. ALS is a progressive neurological disease that attacks nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, affecting muscle movement and eventually leading to loss of physical function.

Why Learning the Signs Matters
ALS can start with subtle symptoms, and early diagnosis is key to accessing care and planning. Understanding the early warning signs helps individuals and families take action sooner and advocate for the support they need.

Common Early Signs of ALS:

Unexplained fatigue or clumsiness

Muscle weakness, especially in the hands, arms, legs, or feet

Trouble walking or frequent tripping

Slurred speech or difficulty swallowing

Muscle cramps or twitching (fasciculations)

Difficulty with everyday tasks like buttoning a shirt or turning a key

Unexplained fatigue or clumsiness

If you or someone you know experiences these symptoms, it’s important to talk to a doctor. While these signs don’t always mean ALS, they should never be ignored.

Raising Awareness Saves Lives
This ALS Awareness Month, take time to educate yourself and others. By knowing the signs, sharing information, and supporting those affected, you help bring visibility and hope to the ALS community.

Knowledge is power—and with it, we can push for earlier diagnoses, better care, and a brighter future.
