Celebrating Young Readers: National Young Readers Week
Reading opens doors to imagination, knowledge, and new possibilities. During National Young Readers Week (Oct 10–14), we celebrate the joy of reading and encourage children in care to explore stories that inspire, teach, and empower.
For children in foster or kinship care, books can be more than entertainment. They can be safe companions, windows into new worlds, and mirrors reflecting their own experiences. Whether it’s discovering heroes who overcome challenges, exploring fantastical worlds, or learning about different types of people, reading sparks creativity and confidence.
Here are a few ways families can honor National Young Readers Week:

Read together daily. Even 15–20 minutes a day creates a powerful habit.
Let children choose. Encourage kids to pick books that excite them—interest drives engagement.
Visit the library or local book events. Libraries often have storytimes and activities that make reading fun.
Discuss stories. Ask questions about characters and events—it strengthens comprehension and connection.
This week, let’s celebrate the little readers who are growing into thoughtful, imaginative, and resilient individuals. Every page they turn is a step toward brighter possibilities.
Happy National Young Readers Week—let’s turn reading into a lifelong adventure!
