Why Foster Children Need to Hear “Still I Rise” by Maya Angelou
One of Maya Angelou’s most popular poems, “Still I Rise,” is an empowering anthem about the struggle to overcome prejudice and injustice, bringing hope to those who are oppressed and discriminated against.
Although this poem was written with civil rights matters in mind, it is versatile in its language for everyone to understand. “Still I Rise” is a powerful poem that sends out the universal message that no matter what happens in life, there is always greatness to look toward.
There is often a negative stigma that follows children in foster care, as some assume they are destined to have behavioral and developmental issues, criminal records, mental and emotional instability, etc. But time and again, the resilient children and families with whom we work prove this common belief to be false.
Whether you’re a parent or caregiver, we encourage you to show this video to the children in your care or to read “Still I Rise” with them. Anyone who has seen adversity can agree with the theme of this poem—don’t give in to persecution, tyranny, shame and inequity. It is a crucial lesson to remember not only this Black History Month, but each and every day.
