ASCI Exec Shares Important Legacy of BGLOs

Before the establishment of Black Greek-letter organizations (BGLOs) in the early 1900s, people of color were not able to participate in university clubs, committees or organizations in America. BGLOs gave these students a safe space to unite, build their own campus networks and service surrounding Black communities. BGLOs continue to thrive today and are a celebrated staple of Black culture.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded at Howard University in Washington, DC, in 1913, and ASCI executive Toni Wagner became a member in 1986. Her sorority offers educational scholarships and supports existing endeavors that uplift and beautify the Black community. Members even assisted ASCI in building the playground at our Pittsburgh campus in 2017! When asked about Delta Sigma Theta, Wagner answered, “Many are called, but few are chosen.” Thank you, Toni, for giving us a glimpse into this important tradition in Black history!
