Unseen Strength: Honoring Fathers in Child Welfare
Every June, we’re reminded of the profound and invaluable role fathers play and at A Second Chance, Inc. that includes those fathers connected to and in the child welfare system. While the spotlight often shines on mothers, research and experience overwhelmingly show that engaged fathers are powerful agents of stability, growth, and healing.

Fathers in every form offer unique and irreplaceable contributions to a child’s emotional, social, and psychological development. Their consistent and loving presence is directly linked to better outcomes in education, self-esteem, and resilience in youth. Children with involved fathers are more likely to form healthy relationships, make confident decisions, and develop a strong sense of identity.
Yet, too often in child welfare practice, fathers have been overlooked or minimized. Unfortunate assumptions about absenteeism, incarceration, or strained relationships can lead systems to unintentionally excluding fathers from meaningful participation in case planning and family engagement. This not only hinders reunification efforts but can unintentionally send the heartbreaking message that a father’s voice doesn’t matter, but it does. That thinking is a notion that is harmful and false. When fathers are engaged, children thrive. It’s a simple, yet powerful truth.

As child welfare professionals, we must take intentional steps to invite, include, and uplift fathers, recognizing their immense potential and supporting their growth. Whether through empowering parenting programs, innovative fatherhood initiatives, or simply by asking that crucial question, “What do you need to be the parent your child deserves?”, we can help fathers step fully into their role with confidence and care.
At ASCI, we understand the critical importance of this support. We actively work to empower fathers by providing resources, guidance, and a community where they can feel seen and valued. ASCI believes in helping them navigate life and build stronger bonds with their children. Our programs aim to break down barriers and foster meaningful connections, ensuring fathers have the tools and encouragement they need to be the best possible pillars of strength for their families.
The importance of fathers isn’t just a talking point at ASCI. It’s woven directly into the fabric of our mission, vision, and mantra, guiding every single interaction and service we provide. We deeply understand that a child’s best chance at a thriving future often includes the consistent, loving presence of their father. Whether they are biological fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers, or fictive kin, their involvement is critical to creating a stable, nurturing environment. We actively work to engage fathers because we know that when they are strengthened, the entire family unit thrives, leading to greater stability and ultimately, permanency for the child.

This Father’s Day, we honor all the men who are showing up and doing their absolute best to nurture, protect, and lead. Their presence is not just meaningful; it’s truly transformative.
Let us commit to making space for fathers and father figures, not just in our celebrations, but in our everyday practice. Let’s ensure their voices are heard and their contributions are celebrated year-round.
To every father making a difference, thank you! Your impact lasts a lifetime, and at A Second Chance, Inc., we are proud to stand with you, supporting your incredible journey.
