This movie depicts the real life events of American abolitionist and political activist, Harriet Tubman. Harriet primarily focuses on the period in Tubman’s life when she escaped slavery in Maryland and traveled to and from Philadelphia, rescuing more than 300 slaves as a key figure in the Underground Railroad. Tubman used the city of Philadelphia as the base for several dangerous missions back to Maryland to rescue slaves, even after the 1850 passage of the Fugitive Slave Act, which made Philadelphia extremely dangerous for free blacks.
