Mattel Honors Dr. Maya Angelou with New Barbie Doll

The Barbie brand is honoring another important icon, Dr. Maya Angelou, as the newest of doll in their Inspiring Women Collection. During her lifetime, Dr. Angelou impacted many lives through her work as a poet, author, and activist speaking up for civil rights and against racism. One of Dr. Angelou’s best-known books, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, comes with the doll in a tiny version.

In her likeness, the doll wears a head wrap and a floral dress. Mattel shares why paying tribute to Angelou’s legacy was important.

“(Mattel) knows children’s early childhood experiences shape what they imagine to be possible, so it’s important that all girls not only see themselves reflected in product and content, but to also see role models who’ve come before them,” the company said in a press release.

Angelou’s son, Guy Johnson, told Today, “My mother, Dr. Maya Angelou, was a pioneer and an activist with an invincible spirit for justice,” .

He continued, “Through her words and actions, she developed a unique ability to create deep connections with people around the world. She used to say, ‘I write from the Black perspective, but I aim for the human heart.'”

Other dolls in the series include Amelia Earhart, Katherine Johnson, Frida Kahlo, Rosa Parks, Sally Ride and more.

Mattel also ensures that they are committed to creating Barbie dolls influenced by women of color in the series. “In 2021 and going forward, more than 50% of global role models featured will be Black, Indigenous and women of color,” they share.
