Maternal Mental Health Month: Supporting Moms, Strengthening Families
Every May, we observe Maternal Mental Health Month to bring attention to a topic that too often stays in the shadows: the mental and emotional well-being of mothers during pregnancy and the postpartum period.
While motherhood is often portrayed as joyful and fulfilling, many women experience something different. Up to 1 in 5 mothers face perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs), including postpartum depression, anxiety, OCD, and PTSD. These conditions can appear during pregnancy or months after giving birth, and they can happen to anyone, regardless of age, background, or experience.
Yet, stigma and silence surround maternal mental health. Many moms suffer alone, afraid to speak up or unsure where to turn. Without support, their struggles can impact not only their well-being but also their children’s development and the health of the whole family.
