Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Celebrating His Legacy of Service

MLK Day is a Day On, Not a Day Off

MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. As we observe MLK Day this year, let us examine the ways in which we can use our common kinship to continue the fight for equity through systemic change within our communities and as a nation. In honoring Dr. King’s legacy, make this day, one of service, education, and unity.

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and the days surrounding it, we invite you to:

  • Engage with your community and create constructive action;
  • Act on Dr. King’s legacy of social justice and equity; and
  • Recommit by volunteering to serve others. You can clean up a public space, mentor a young person, or help food-insecure families.

Together, we can strengthen ties to our communities and one another while we address critical issues that divide us. Visit mlkday.gov to learn about more ways to get involved on this day of service.
