Child Welfare Legislative Updates: March 28-April 8, 2022

Please review the following child welfare legislative updates pertinent to children and families from March 28, 2022, through April 8, 2022. These bills and other important legislation can be tracked at GovTrack.us.

Child Protection

S. 3951—Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO)/Judiciary (3/29/22)—A bill to establish appropriate penalties for possession of child pornography, and for other purposes.

H.R. 7263—Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO)/Judiciary (3/29/22)—A bill to establish appropriate penalties for possession of child pornography, and for other purposes.

ASCI Connection: These bills will support ASCI’s dedication to raising awareness around the prevention of child abuse and providing support and protection for victims of child abuse.

Child Care

S.3899—Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC)/Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (3/22/21)—A bill to amend the Child Care and Development Block Grant Act of 1990 to reauthorize and update the Act, and for other purposes.

ASCI Connection: This bill will aid ASCI in providing guidance and resources to caregivers and birth families concerning child care options available to them through our community support groups

Education

H.R. 7294—Rep. Ashley Hinson (R-IA)/Education and Labor (3/30/22)—A bill to require public institutions of higher education to disseminate information on the rights of, and accommodations and resources for, pregnant students, and for other purposes. 

Family Support

S. 3918—Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-NM)/Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (3/24/22)—A bill to establish programs to improve family economic security by breaking the cycle of multigenerational poverty, and for other purposes. 

ASCI Connection: This bill will aid ASCI in providing families and/or caregivers knowledge of the resources available to them through our support groups.

Health

H.R. 7249—Rep. Doris Matsui (D-CA)/Energy and Commerce (3/28/22)—A bill to provide education and training on eating disorders for health care providers and communities, and for other purposes. 

S. 3972—Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ)/Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (3/31/22)—A bill to improve research and data collection on stillbirths, and for other purposes.

H.R. 7358—Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT)/Energy and Commerce (4/1/22)—A bill to apply the exempt infant formula requirements to certain human donor milk, and for other purposes. 

Violence Against Women 

S. 3963—Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV)/Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (3/30/22)—A bill to protect survivors from brain injury by authorizing the secretary of Health and Human Services to collect data on the prevalence of brain injuries resulting from domestic and sexual violence.

H.R. 7301—Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ)/Energy and Commerce (3/30/22)—A bill to protect survivors from brain injury by authorizing the secretary of Health and Human Services to collect data on the prevalence of brain injuries resulting from domestic and sexual violence. 

ASCI Connection: These bills will support ASCI’s dedication to servicing, advocating for and supporting women and women’s rights.

Women’s History

H. Res. 1008—Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA)/Oversight and Reform (3/28/22)—A resolution supporting the goals and ideals of National Women’s History Month.

Important Policy Updates:

The House and Senate are in session this week. 

Health

This week, the House will consider several bills, including H.R. 1218, the Data Mapping to Save Moms’ Lives Act.
