Black Children vs Suicide: A Growing Pandemic

Over the past decade suicide attempts among Black children rose 92% – some children were as young as 5.

Mental health advocates want more efforts to support Black youth dealing with mental health issues. With Black teen suicide rates heightening faster than White teens, experts worry that current public health crises may put them at even higher risks. Given the impact of COVID-19 and police violence on Black communities, young Black people may be more exposed to trauma.

In response, advocates are urging lawmakers to get more funding for mental health care in Black communities and research to understand suicide risks affecting Black youth. Other attempts are focused on normalizing discussions surrounding mental health in Black communities and inspiring those struggling with their mental health to seek treatment.
