A Journey of Love and Belonging: Celebrating National Adoption Day with Patricia and Alexis
Every month, A Second Chance, Inc. highlights the voices of our kinship families. As an organization dedicated to creating a secure and nurturing environment for children in the care of relatives or close family friends – commonly referred to as kinship care – we understand the significance of acknowledging the real-life experiences of caregivers, birth parents, and children. We aim to spotlight invaluable insights that contribute to genuine narratives and shape meaningful programs. Through these conversations, we aim to promote understanding and establish a supportive community for kinship families. This month, we were privileged to converse with adoptive mother, Patricia Thomas.
National Adoption Day is a celebration that brings attention to the thousands of children in foster care waiting for a loving home. On this special day, families come together to finalize adoptions, marking a significant milestone in the lives of both parents and children. Communities across the country host events to raise awareness about the importance of adoption and to highlight the joy of finding forever families.
As families across the nation celebrate this joyous occasion, Patricia Thomas reflects on her own journey, one that brings her family closer together. Her foster child, Alexis, will soon officially become Alexis Thomas, a milestone they are both eagerly anticipating.
“She was actually our anniversary present,” Patricia shares, recalling the day Alexis joined their family. Initially a bit shy, Alexis quickly began to open up, forming a bond that would soon transform into a permanent connection.
When Alexis first arrived, she was reserved and distant, but Patricia’s gentle approach began to peel away the layers of hesitation. “I started to talk with her to find out her likes, dislikes, and what happened to her,” Patricia explains. It was through these conversations that the bond began to grow. Patricia believes wholeheartedly in the importance of love and stability for children like Alexis.
“She deserves to be loved.”

With their grandchildren frequently visiting, the household thrived on laughter and support, creating a nurturing environment for Alexis to flourish. Community support plays a significant role in their journey. They even ventured to Michigan, where Alexis connected with Patricia’s paternal family, reinforcing her sense of belonging.
One of Patricia’s greatest joys was witnessing Alexis’s comfort in their home. “It’s just the fact that she’s comfortable with us. The best part was her calling me ‘Mom’.” Patricia shared, her heart swelling with pride. She envisions a bright future for Alexis—graduating high school, going to college, and becoming a productive member of the community.
Patricia reflects on the valuable guidance that instilled confidence in them at every stage. They began creating new traditions together. “Alexis is not the best dancer,” Patricia laughs, recalling their dance lessons. “So, I try to teach her a little bit of what I know and that’s fun.”
She believes in fostering a sense of acceptance and comfort for every child that enters a home. For families contemplating adoption, Patricia had simple yet profound advice.
“Make sure that you’re doing it for the right reasons, to
benefit the child. It’s about the children that are coming into your household.”Patricia Thomas
Patricia’s journey with Alexis is a testament to love, resilience, and the transformative power of family. In every moment, she is reminded that every child deserves a chance to thrive in a warm, welcoming home.
